Small Business Owners Divided on Wall Street Bailout Plan

Glenview, IL — October 4, 2008

A survey conducted this month by online payroll service SurePayroll reveals that small business owners are evenly divided on whether the federal government is making the right decision in bailing out financial firms on Wall Street.

“The number of business owners who thought the government is doing the right thing was exactly equal to the number of business owners who thought the government was making a mistake,” says SurePayroll President Michael Alter. “We are clearly a divided nation on this issue.”

When asked, “What is your primary reaction regarding the bailout?” survey participants responded as follows:

— 45.4% “It’s sad that we have to do it.”

— 36.6% “I am angry about it.”

— 2.7% “I am glad that it’s happening”

— 15.27% Other

“When you are talking about small business, you are talking about the most ardent supporters of capitalism and the free markets,” added Alter. “It’s really not surprising that there’s some disillusionment in the systems having failed in this instance.”

Is the Bailout Good for Small Business?

The small business community is also divided on whether the bailout plan is good or bad for small business owners. In this case, however, a slight majority believes the bailout plan is negative for small business. According to the SurePayroll survey, 51.5% responded that the bailout plan is bad in this regard, while the other 48.5% indicated the bailout plan is good.

One survey respondent indicated that if the bailout doesn’t happen, the U.S. will be in a sorry state of affairs, and likewise further add momentum to the downhill route of the economy.

Another thinks the nation’s crisis is a symptom of poor government policy: “The financial problem is a function of an overreaching, ever expanding government policy that has been evolving for years. The public sector needs to shrink and the private sector thus needs to expand — this is a direction that will ultimately solve problems without so much controversy in the future.”

Other comments include:

—-”We should not be bailing out, rewarding or encouraging bad judgment. There should be consequences to selling bad loans. Instead of giving Wall Street and Congress a blank check, they should be investigated and sent to prison.”

—-”I don’t like the potential cost to the citizens of America. This should have been caught earlier and now we have to bail out to keep the financial industry from having an even worse effect on the economy.”

About the SurePayroll Small Business Owner Survey

This survey was conducted as an online questionnaire, with responses coming from 262 small business owners that are believed to be a representative sampling of the U.S. small business economy by geographic location and industry.

PayCycle Finds 58% Small Business Owners Feel Government Not Addressing Needs; 69% Not Impacted by Credit Squeeze but 91% Worried About Economy

Palo Alto, CA — October 23, 2008

PayCycle, Inc, America’s #1 online payroll service, today released the results of a proprietary survey that found 58% of small business owners do not feel the government is addressing their needs. Sixty-nine percent (69%) say they are not directly impacted by the credit squeeze because they don’t need more credit, but 91% are still worried about the economy.

When it comes to economic recovery, nearly 3 out of 4 (74%) of small business owners believe the recovery will take 18 months or longer; 19% per cent believe a recovery could happen within 12 months and only 8% believe a recovery is six months away.

Fourteen percent (14%) indicate they are postponing investment and 8 percent (8%) are postponing hiring plans because they can’t get a loan. Nine percent (9%) indicated they may need to close their businesses due to lack of credit.

“It’s not primarily the credit squeeze that is worrying small business; the clear majority of them don’t need more credit. What they are most worried about is losing customers as consumer spending contracts,” said Jim Heeger, president and CEO of PayCycle. “And, it’s clear that small business owners are hunkering down for a slow recovery that they believe will last well into 2010.”

Small Business Owners Share Survival Tactics

The survey found that small business owners are using a variety of tactics to survive the economic crisis. Some are laying off employees or turning to contract labor to save costs, some are offering new services or special discounts, many are delaying equipment purchases, and most are shaving costs from various operational line items and personal expenses.

Here’s what PayCycle customers have to say:

“I have cut back on everything that is unnecessary. Drive less, buy less. Question myself on every item. Do I really need that? Change phone services, cut cable packages, cut back on contributions to SEP and IRA, cut back on overpaying mortgage, change health insurance options, change car insurance options, keep the house warmer, have kid’s party at a park instead of a fancy facility,” said Lee-Anne Steinhardt, owner of TransRX in Florida.

“I have moved to a less expensive location and my husband and I have had to come out of retirement and return to work. We also had to cut our payroll, including laying off my own daughter, a single mother. I am almost 60 and my husband is soon to be 65 and a heart attack survivor. You do what you have to do to get through these tough times”, commented Kathy Braatz, co-owner of KC’s Drivers School in Wisconsin.

“We are robbing Peter to pay Paul like everyone else. Pay advances are non-existent, benefits are gone and purchasing is limited to what’s absolutely necessary. We’re taking care of each other and hanging on to what we possess the best we can,” said Lynn Vosburgh of Vivid Ink, in Michigan.

The survey, conducted between October 17 and October 21, 2008, compiled responses from 215 small businesses randomly selected from PayCycle’s broad, national base of over 75,000 small business customers.

PayCycle Survey Finds 34% of Small Business Owners Want a Stimulus Package as “First” Action

PayCycle Survey Finds 34% of Small Business Owners Want a Stimulus Package as “First” Action

Palo Alto, Calif — December 2, 2008

PayCycle, Inc., America’s #1 online payroll service, today released results of a proprietary survey that showed 34% of small business owners want President-elect Barack Obama to pass an economic stimulus package as his first step when taking office in January. 24% of respondents identified “fixing health care” as the issue they would advise Obama to tackle first, 9% suggesting fixing Social Security and only 3% wanted to see more bail-out packages.

“These survey results underscore the passion small business owners are showing for the macro-economic issues confronting them. The variety and depth of responses show how involved and concerned small business owners are, not only about their individual businesses and their local situations, but also about the national economy as a whole,” said Jim Heeger, president and CEO of PayCycle Inc.

Impact on Year-End Bonuses, Holiday Parties:

The survey found that almost 53% of small business owners pay some kind of year-end bonus, either to themselves, to their employees or to both. Of this group that do pay bonuses, over half (58%) of the respondents are either canceling bonuses altogether (26%) or canceling their own personal bonus (32%) so they can still pay employees.

When it comes to the annual holiday party, almost half (43%) of traditional party sponsors are either canceling the party or toning it down.

Small Businesses Name Numerous Causes for Economic Woes:

When asked which national issue had the most direct impact on their business in 2008, 32% of respondents indicated the slowdown in consumer spending was the biggest problem area. But many people also mentioned the credit crisis and problems in the housing industry (21%), the decline in the stock market (15%) and the summer spike in gasoline prices (18%). Clearly, for small business owners, there is not just one problem to blame for the current economic conditions.

The remaining 14% of respondents gave a variety of answers ranging from “lack of healthcare reform” to the rise in unemployment. A handful of respondents commented that their businesses had been “spared” from any negative fall-out from the economic crisis.

The survey, conducted between November 19 and November 26, 2008, compiled responses from 321 small businesses randomly selected from PayCycle’s broad, national base of over 75,000 small business customers.

SurePayroll Revolutionizes Payroll Processing with 1-Click™ Payroll Technology

SurePayroll Revolutionizes Payroll Processing with 1-Click™ Payroll Technology

Glenview, IL — December 2, 2008

Today online payroll provider SurePayroll introduced its new 1-Click™ Payroll Technology, a process that reduces time spent on small business payroll processing from minutes to seconds.

In 2000, SurePayroll became the first company to introduce a Software as a Service (SaaS) payroll offering. They continue to be the leading innovator in online payroll processing, frequently adding new, customer-requested features.

1-Click™ Payroll Technology raises the bar for payroll processing:

With the new 1-Click™ Payroll Technology, small business employers can process payroll with a single mouse click.

Prior to the introduction of 1-Click™ Payroll Technology, SurePayroll’s small business customers were able to process payroll in three simple steps. After logging into their account, a customer entered their payroll data, previewed it and then approved payroll. These three steps generally took fewer than two minutes to complete, the fastest payroll processing time in the industry for a solution that automatically files and deposits all payroll taxes.

Small business owners who opt for 1-Click™ Payroll Technology can now process payroll in seconds.

“We’re continually working on developing ways to make payroll as simple as possible for our customers,” says SurePayroll Director of Product Management Steve Kania. “To our mind, small business owners should never have to worry about payroll – it should happen with minimal effort.”

How SurePayroll’s online payroll processing works:

As a result of SurePayroll’s pioneering work in SaaS payroll, the days of calling in payroll at a set time or faxing in payroll to a payroll outsourcing company are long gone.

A SurePayroll customer has online access to their payroll service 24 hours a day, every day. They can run their payroll or access payroll reports whenever and where ever they find it most convenient, even on Web-connected mobile devices such as the Apple iPhone or iPod touch.

SurePayroll takes on all of the responsibilities for a small business owner’s payroll. While taking on a customer’s tax liability, SurePayroll files and deposits their federal, state and local payroll taxes for them. To help keep customers in compliance with the law and avoid paying fines, SurePayroll also automatically reports new hires to state agencies and provides access to updated, customized labor law posters for display in a customer’s workplace.

Their employee self-service feature ensures that small business owners who use SurePayroll don’t need to worry about requests from employees for prior paycheck stubs. Employees can access their payroll stubs and payroll history 24/7 via a secure Web site.

As optional add-on services, SurePayroll has introduced comprehensive, affordable 401(k), healthcare and Workers’ Compensation services tailored to the unique needs of small business owners.

About SurePayroll:

Voted Editor’s Choice for best payroll service by PC Magazine, a Top 100 Product by Accounting Today and finalist in the Best Customer Care and Best Product categories of the 2008 American Business Awards, SurePayroll is America’s largest full-service online payroll service and honoree of the of the Inc. 500 Fastest Growing Businesses award two years in a row.

How Can Company Payroll Services Can Help Your Business?

By: John McLean
Posted: Sep 11, 2008

Every business with employees has the obligation to make sure that those employees get paid regularly and the appropriate deductions have been made from their wages. Many businesses have a payroll department who take care of this and ensure that all legislations regarding wage payments are followed. However today many businesses do not have a dedicated payroll department as this can be very costly. As a result there are payroll services that you can turn to in order to ensure smooth payment of wages for employees.
Company payroll services are invaluable if you own a business and you are looking for a way in which to process wages without having to do it in house. Outsourcing payroll is something that businesses are increasingly turning to as it is a fast, efficient and trusted method of paying their employees without having to spend the time calculating wages and making deductions themselves.
If you are considering using payroll services here is what you can typically expect from them –
• All employee wages to be calculated each week or month – this is obviously dependant on the intervals at which you pay your employees.
• All data entry is performed within the price – this includes employee timesheets if needed and any change of address etc that might be required for the payslip.

Starting A Payroll Services Company

• All employee payslips are printed and sent either directly to the employee or to the business address to be dispatched to employees in the usual manner.
• P45’s and P60’s are created as and when they are needed – simply inform your company payroll services and they will do the rest for you.
• All administration is included – this could be anything from first time set up to creating new records for employees as they join the business.
• Starters to the business and the paperwork that goes with them is totally free of charge – leavers are also free of charge.
• You are able to set up a new payroll service at any time during the year, this means no waiting until a new financial year to begin the set up for your business.
• Postage of wage slips, P45’s and P60’s is also included in the price, this will cut down on the postage costs for your business, once again saving the business even more money. Previously businesses had to pay for their own postage which could prove to be quite costly.
As shown payroll services can not only seamlessly handle all of your payroll needs, but they can also save businesses money by cutting down on the costs involved in administration and postage. Until you use payroll services for all of your company wages you might not fully understand just how much time and money is spent on the creation and maintenance of employee records for the efficient payment of wages. Choosing company payroll services to take over all your payroll needs means that you are freeing up time that could be spent in other areas of the business. This is especially important if you are the owner of a medium sized business where you were responsible for the calculations of employee wages.
So if you are looking to outsource your company payroll and ensure that all deductions are made correctly and in line with the latest government legislation then you should look into payroll services. Not only will you save time and money for your business but you can rest assured knowing that your company payroll is being done by professionals at a fraction of the price of paying someone in-house to complete it full time.
